Just as friendly as his son.

phroobin asked: Hey Mad! I was wondering if you had some kind of reference for what letter each symbol Jan uses in his speech represents? I feel sort of embarrassed to admit it, but as much as I try I seem to only be able to pick up on half of the things he says and it would be great to understand it all if you have time to do such a thing!

I’m sorry to disappoint anybody, but there is literally no rhyme or reason to his depicted speech, and only being able to SORT OF MAYBE?? understand him is basically the point. Sometimes I make the symbols look like relevant letters, sometimes I don’t! I’m trying to visually represent what is normally experienced audibly when two people who speak very different languages try to communicate. Namely, “I’m sorry, what? WHAT????”

So, forgive me but, the fact that most people can’t always tell what he’s saying GIVES ME GREAT JOY AND WAS REALLY THE POINT THIS WHOLE TIME. DON’T TRY TO DECIPHER IT, JUST ALLOW YOURSELF TO BE CONFUSED.

crankymuse asked: Have you drawn any other Sakanas when they're older, or just Yuudai?

I think there’s a Jiro and a Taisei floating around somewhere…

Anonymous asked: From where exactly in Germany does Jan come?

I haven’t really decided yet! It’s kind of a toss up between Berlin and Düsseldorf. Unless somebody has a better suggestion??

Taro makes an attempt to be festive.

thebitchjerkcomplex asked: does yuudai like halloween? Also, does yuudai like scary movies at all, or is that more of taisei's thing?sorry i gotta know, coz i love halloween and scary movies!

This is about as festive as Yuudai gets. Neither he nor Taisei likes scary movies.

JAN ON THE OTHER HAND…

yokozumi:

“why is yuudai always so sweaty”

robbiethewabbit asked: Hey, Mad, remember the strip in which Taro says that "four's a nice, friendly number"? In Japan, four is actually the unlucky number, since it's pronounced almost the same as 'death'.

People have been pointing this out to me for years now IT WAS A JOKE AND I FIXED IT IN THE PRINTED VERSIONNNNNNNN
